Change of Address Checklist: Who to Notify When Moving House

Moving house isn’t just about packing boxes - it’s also about making sure the right people know where you’ve moved to.

From your bank and energy suppliers to your GP and subscriptions, it’s easy to forget something important.

To help, we’ve created a clear change of address checklist so you can stay organised and avoid missed bills, lost post or unnecessary stress.

Download the printable checklist below, or use the guide on this page.

Insurance providers

Don’t forget:

  • Home & contents insurance

  • Car insurance

  • Life insurance

  • Pet or health insurance

Your postcode can affect pricing, so update this early.

Healthcare providers

If you’re moving area:

  • GP

  • Dentist

  • Optician

  • Any specialists

You may need to register with new providers depending on your location.

Work, education & subscriptions

Also update:

  • Employer

  • Schools or universities

  • Subscriptions (Amazon, deliveries, magazines)

  • Gyms, memberships and clubs

These are often overlooked but easy to update once listed.

When should you change your address?

Ideally, you should start updating your address 2–4 weeks before your move, with key services (like utilities and banks) prioritised early.

Some updates, like Royal Mail redirection, can be set up in advance to give you extra cover.

Who to notify when moving house

When you move, you’ll need to update your address across multiple areas of your life. The key is breaking it down into simple categories.

Government & official organisations

Start with the most important updates:

  • HMRC

  • DVLA (driving licence & vehicle log book)

  • Electoral register

  • Department for Work & Pensions (if applicable)

  • Local council (council tax & services)

These are essential for legal, tax and identity purposes

Banks & financial services

Make sure your financial information is up to date:

  • Bank accounts & building societies

  • Credit cards

  • Loans & mortgages

  • Pension providers

  • Investment platforms

Keeping these updated helps prevent fraud and missed correspondence.

Utilities & household services

Arrange updates or transfers for:

  • Gas & electricity

  • Water

  • Broadband & phone

  • TV licence

  • Mobile providers

Also consider setting up a Royal Mail redirect to catch anything you’ve missed.
